Tour of Britain 2010
Sporting
The prestigious Tour of Britain 2010 cycle road race comes to Dartmoor. Watch 100+ riders begin the 5th Stage of the race in ancient market town of Tavistock.
The event dates back several decades, during which various names have been used depending on the prime sponsor – Milk race, the Kellogg’s Tour of Britain and the PruTour.
The current Tour series began in 2004. It is a category 2.3 race on the UCI Europe Tour calendar so it attracts many big names and lots of interest, and is the first major event after the Tour de France.
This year there are 8 Stages spread around the UK. Two are in the West Country; Stage 4 goes from Minehead to Teignmouth on 14th September. The 5th Stage on 15th September is Tavistock to Glastonbury -176 km, and is being seen as the hardest section with a long climb from the start out onto Dartmoor from Tavistock and past the famous prison at Princetown. The first half of the stage is hilly, but it flattens out later on as the Tour draws towards Glastonbury.
The tour eventually finishes with a sprint around the nation's capital in London on 18th September.
