Eating & Drinking on Dartmoor

A host of Dartmoor's restaurants, pubs and tea-rooms are housed in historic buildings throughout the National Park. There's even a pub in a thatched Dartmoor longhouse.

After a bracing hike, at any time of year, across the tors you can dine in style beside a roaring log fire, or follow up a streamside stroll in summer with a light lunch on a shady terrace. The lion's share of Dartmoor's pubs and inns are centuries-old, some dating back to the Middle Ages, keeping alive a tradition of offering quality Dartmoor food to passing travellers. In their oak-panelled, slate-floored bars you'll come across real ales such as the renowned Jail Ale from Princetown Brewery.

Dartmoor's best restaurant chefs pride themselves on using local produce and seasonal vegetable wherever possible - one country house hotel even boasts that all its ingredients 'travel an average of just six food miles'.

And don't forget the traditional Devon Cream Tea with lashings of cream and jam made with summer ripened fruits.
