Winter Wander
Distance: 9 miles
Difficulty: Hard
Start/End point: Meldon Reservoir car park (Grid Ref: SX563918).
Some of the highest ground in southern England rises above Meldon Reservoir. A path winds up beside Red-a-ven Brook to Yes Tor and High Willhays. From here the views are magnificient, stretching over remote moorland on one side and across North Devon on the other.
This is a spectacular walk in any season, but it's best after early winter snow. In these conditions take extra walking socks with you - snow has a habit of disguising boggy areas!
This route enters Okehampton firing range, so please check firing times by calling 01837 53020.
Theme: Moorland,
Special Interest: Nature,
Area: Dartmoor National Park.
Relevant maps/guides: O.S. Explorer 113, Landranger 191.
Facilities along route: Public toilets beside the car park at the reservoir. Refreshments can be found in pubs and cafes in Okehampton.
There is only one stile on this route. It is suitable for active family groups and obedient dogs! There are public footpaths, tracks, and two streches of open moorland. Can be boggy in places. This route is quite challenging and will take roughly 5 hours for the average walker.
