Yarner Wood

Distance: 9 miles
Difficulty: Hard
Start/End point: Liverton (Grid Ref: SX805751).

Explore parts of Dartmoor's lovely border country that the casual visitor rarely reaches.

The charming village of Ilsington is centred around the church and Carpenters Arms pub. The handsome south-west lych gate and its room above are 20th-century replacements of an earlier building which had, in turn, replaced a room once used as the schoolhouse.

According to church records, this collapsed in spectacular fashion in 1639 due to banging of the gate underneath. Apparently, the schoolmasters and 17 boys in the building at the time were all unhurt.

St. Michael's Cottages, adjacent to the lych gate, dates from Tudor times and was originally the Church House, later the Poor House. It was converted to private dwellings in the 1930s.

Theme: Country, Heritage,
