Inside the boundary of Dartmoor National Park, set amongst the moorland farming community and with open moor only a 10 minute walk up a no-through lane. Sowtontown is am ideal base for a walking or riding holiday - with routes directly from the doorstep to the tors, valleys and villages. There is a choice of riding stables in the area and stabling may be arranged at Sowtontown for holidaymakers who wish to bring their own horse.
Peter Tavy is the nearest village. It has a church and a 15thC inn that serves good meals. On beyond Peter Tavy and further up the Tavy valley lies Mary Tavy, once a prolific tin mining community.
There are endless possibilities for exploring the area; breathtaking landscape, historic remains of Bronze Age stone rows and circles, leats and mines. During many weeks of the year there are a variety of guided walks on themes of local interest, organised by the Dartmoor National Park Authority; a list of these is provided in the accommodation. The north and south coasts are both within easy reach for beaches and coastal paths, approximately 1 hour drive away. There are several nearby golf courses and fishing is available close by. Tavistock (winner of best market town 2004) is 3 miles away. It is an attractive town with a long history and up to date shopping facilities, modern swimming pool, arts centre, museum and an excellent tourist information centre. There are plenty of local attractions to suit all ages.
